Errors Middle School Students Make When Performing Mathematical Modelling Tasks

Background: In Costa Rica, since 2012, schoolchildren have been trained in modelling as a fundamental part of the educational curriculum. Objectives: To identify and characterise errors incurred by group secondary school students Rica when applying mathematical process phases solving direct proportionality tasks. Design: Through qualitative approach, specifically case study, it aims to study participants’ social interpretations. Setting Participants : The tasks were applied 24 attending 7th level middle education province San Jose topic is deepened participants instructed first years elementary school. Data collection analysis: Information was collected through written productions, researchers’ observation, interviews. Content analysis carried out categorisation proposed Abrate et al. (2006) analyse errors. Results: did not apply all process, making more due incorrect or unintended calculations associations model. Conclusions: We concluded that detected this work are elements reflection, progress, feedback should encourage teachers’ search for strategies help solve deficiencies emerge activities.
